GET THE FACTS:

  • World Environment Day
Created by a UN resolution on December 15, 1972, the General Assembly designated June 1st-5th as World Environment Day to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment. That date also recalls the opening day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm, 1972), which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the United  Nations.

  • World Population Day
This year will mark the fourteenth  annual World Population Day. Celebrated by people around the world, World Population Day was officially acknowledged in 1989 by the United Nations Population Fund’s Governing Council as a day to promote population-related issues. Since then, World Population Day is observed around the world, often to highlight important issues like reproductive health, HIV/AIDS,  and population growth.

  • International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
In 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed September 16th the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus, helping preserve life on the planet.

  • National Pollution Prevention Week
This week became a national event in 1996. Each year, observers are encouraged to learn how to incorporate activities that reduce, reuse and recycle waste into their daily routines. Today, most states across the country celebrate the week by promoting activities at home, work, school, businesses, agencies, organizations, and within local communities that will foster a prosperous and sustainable future.

  • World Habitat Day
Every year, since 1985, when it was designated by the UN General Assembly, World Habitat Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in October. This day has been set aside by the UN for the world to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter and to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.

  • National Rainforest Week
Traditionally, the third week in October has been designated National Rainforest Week. The goal of this week is to educate people of every age about global concerns over depleting rainforests. The rainforests are one of the world's largest natural resources. Home to millions of different plants and animals, rainforests cover about 7 percent of the world's surface and generate much of the oxygen needed for organisms to live. Sadly, these forests and the plants and animals within them are currently being destroyed at a rapid rate.

  • International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction
In 2001, the General Assembly decided to maintain the observance of the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on the second Wednesday of October, as a vehicle to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.
